4。5 stars。 I consumed this by reading the book and listening to the audiobook at the same time and I highly recommend it。 Sloss has spent years honing his storytelling skills and it shows。 As with a lot of Daniel Sloss content, he dishes a lot of harsh truth wrapped in comedic format and a lot of it really reasonates with me。 He touches on a lot of topics he covers over his comedy specials (if you’re not familiar with them I would search TWs) but not in a way that seemed repetitive or boring。 He 4。5 stars。 I consumed this by reading the book and listening to the audiobook at the same time and I highly recommend it。 Sloss has spent years honing his storytelling skills and it shows。 As with a lot of Daniel Sloss content, he dishes a lot of harsh truth wrapped in comedic format and a lot of it really reasonates with me。 He touches on a lot of topics he covers over his comedy specials (if you’re not familiar with them I would search TWs) but not in a way that seemed repetitive or boring。 He has a lot of interesting insights, I think anyone who has previously liked his work will love this and anyone who hasn’t should pick it up for a good laugh。 He also includes content that wasn’t in his shows (so far) such as his mental health struggles as a result of going from a stage of constant gratification from strangers to the void of COVID-19。 He also included how great he feels in his new relationship which, considering his previous stance on relationships, was super heart warming considering he is now engaged and has his first child。 I’m happy for him。SPOILERSSome of my fav quotes: On sexual assault “Men need to keep other men in line because when women try to do it they’re called insane。 Or many worse things。” Pg 187On toxic relationships “Emotional abuse is tough because it takes you ages to realise what’s going on。 Physical violence is horrific, but least you know when you’ve been punched” pg 193 On mental health “there may be no happy ending of mental health because you shouldn’t think of there being a final point。 You can’t aim towards being a final product because you might live beyond that。 It’s all a process”。 “I often thought that having the person I wanted to become was a good thing。 I’d use it to inspire myself every day to become better。 Instead, my brain decided to use it as a comparison point for everything I wasn’t”。 Pg 232“If you don’t love yourself, you’re going to spend the rest of your life auditioning people to do it for you” pg 242 。。。more

Okay, I'm not the audience for this book。 I've watched some of Sloss's stand up, and this is exactly that (complete with the language and boundary pushing) - but I didn't like the translation from HBO special to book。I think he's funny and insightful about death and relationships, the writing here just didn't work for me。 I'd rather watch his television specials than read the book。 Okay, I'm not the audience for this book。 I've watched some of Sloss's stand up, and this is exactly that (complete with the language and boundary pushing) - but I didn't like the translation from HBO special to book。I think he's funny and insightful about death and relationships, the writing here just didn't work for me。 I'd rather watch his television specials than read the book。 。。。more
Sarah Winchester,
This was my first time reading a book by a comedian。 I was drawn to Daniel Sloss because of his stand up show “Jigsaw”, in which he mixed the best advice on relationships I’ve ever heard, with comedy。 I highly recommend watching Jigsaw on Netflix if you’re feeling unsure about a relationship you’re in。 Anyway, the book sort of had this mix of seriousness/comedy, but I found his tendency to ramble so distracting, simply because I didn’t care about so many of the side thoughts he was having and fo This was my first time reading a book by a comedian。 I was drawn to Daniel Sloss because of his stand up show “Jigsaw”, in which he mixed the best advice on relationships I’ve ever heard, with comedy。 I highly recommend watching Jigsaw on Netflix if you’re feeling unsure about a relationship you’re in。 Anyway, the book sort of had this mix of seriousness/comedy, but I found his tendency to ramble so distracting, simply because I didn’t care about so many of the side thoughts he was having and for some reason had to write down? They were so off topic and irrelevant, sometimes I had to re read a sentence 3 times to grasp what he was on about。 Many of the topics he covered were just so bland to read about, at one point I actually didn’t think I would finish the book - I did, woo。 With that, he put in a lot of controversial opinions, some of which made me question if I want to support him at all - I’m still not sure。 He portrayed these opinions in the most ignorant way possible, like anyone who disagreed is just a fucking idiot who should re evaluate their spot on this Earth。 Although I guess that is just his “thing”, an arrogant, narcissistic, cis, straight white man (always a great combination), which he won’t let you forget throughout the book (literally how he refers to himself)。 Finally, there were many little errors throughout the book - grammar, statistical and definitely structural。 There were so many points in the book he would contradict himself on something he’d written earlier which portrayed him to be so conceited and ill-informed about all the stuff he was talking about。 Not to mention completely over confident because he is always so sure one what he is saying。 All of these sentences will totally make sense if you read the book。 In saying all of this, there were some great chapters in the book and it’s pretty comforting to know that everyone you hate is going to die;) 。。。more

Incredible cover。 Like, really good。 If you’re looking for an expanded version of his specials with some background context, then you will enjoy this book。 But - it doesn’t have much new content and I don’t think it was as well developed and workshopped as his specials。 His strength as a comedian really comes from his ability to control the room: building tension, releasing it, and having a crowd to respond to his grandstanding。 In book form when it’s just author-to-reader, it’s more intimate an Incredible cover。 Like, really good。 If you’re looking for an expanded version of his specials with some background context, then you will enjoy this book。 But - it doesn’t have much new content and I don’t think it was as well developed and workshopped as his specials。 His strength as a comedian really comes from his ability to control the room: building tension, releasing it, and having a crowd to respond to his grandstanding。 In book form when it’s just author-to-reader, it’s more intimate and vulnerable。 The tension can’t be built in the same way, and the grandiosity behind a lot of his jokes can fall flat。 。。。more

A funny book and an easy read。 Not too much more than what is in his comedy specials, so make sure to watch those to get the “Sloss-ness Monster” experience。
Miranda,
This book is very similar to his standup, so if you enjoy that you may enjoy this book。 I was drawn to it by the title。 He has a very matter of fact, black and white view of many things that can be funny and true。 At times it is a little slow or repetitive but overall enjoyable。
Andi,
We did the audiobook which made it easier, I think, to receive it in the spirit it was offered & not take it too seriously。 We laughed out loud often, and had an interesting conversation about our relationship as 30+ year high school sweethearts who are still together & not bothered by his take。 Sloss is funny and crass, but surprisingly insightful。 I enjoy hearing about experiences different from my own。 And I appreciated his admitting there are things he can’t do or opine on because he’s a whi We did the audiobook which made it easier, I think, to receive it in the spirit it was offered & not take it too seriously。 We laughed out loud often, and had an interesting conversation about our relationship as 30+ year high school sweethearts who are still together & not bothered by his take。 Sloss is funny and crass, but surprisingly insightful。 I enjoy hearing about experiences different from my own。 And I appreciated his admitting there are things he can’t do or opine on because he’s a white heterosexual cis male。 I’m a little annoyed with his aggressive hatred of poetry, but it’s part of the schtik。 I think this one is better for folks who haven’t seen all of his standup bc yes, some of it is repetitive。 Some folks will be put off by his ribbing of Americans and England-he’s Scottish yall。 Get over it。 Or don’t pick this one up or you can’t。 I do recommend the audiobook if you decide to give this one a go。 。。。more

Liisa-Reet Piirimäe,
I love Daniel on stage and the book had me laughing really hard at times, but perhaps not all comedy writers should write a book。 Enjoyable at first, but an overall sense of rambling throughout。
Lexi Lariviere,
Daniel Sloss has been a favorite comedian of mine for about a year now。 He is cunning, intelligent, funny, and brilliant。 He uses his innate humor to capture the audience and your attention。 At first you may find him to be a foul mouthed vulgar, immature male。 However, he uses his comedic platform to talk about all of the dirty and mundane parts of life: sex, relationships, mental health and the like。 This book, like Sloss, is absolutely brilliant and worth the read。
Rita Branco,
Honest, brutal and funny life "advice" from someone who is absolutely not qualified to give life advice。 Just a good read all around, that is down to earth enough to make you think but it keeps it light with the sense of humour。 Honest, brutal and funny life "advice" from someone who is absolutely not qualified to give life advice。 Just a good read all around, that is down to earth enough to make you think but it keeps it light with the sense of humour。 。。。more
Hannah Garner,
I liked this book a lot, he writes very authentically and if you like his stand up then you’ll like this book。 It’s basically just his thoughts on some topics that he has opinions about。 I think it’s nice to have a real voice speaking and not something that is polished completely。
Dwayne Lynn,
Super smart, incredibly insightful, funny as hell。 I loved this and immediately went to find his standup (also incredible)。This dude is my kind of people。 At times it felt like I was reading my own late-night streams of consciousness and it made me think three things:1。 At least I'm not the only one with these thoughts2。 Maybe I should visit Scotland 3。 When I get to drinking and start spouting this stuff, I probably annoy the shit out of everyone around me Super smart, incredibly insightful, funny as hell。 I loved this and immediately went to find his standup (also incredible)。This dude is my kind of people。 At times it felt like I was reading my own late-night streams of consciousness and it made me think three things:1。 At least I'm not the only one with these thoughts2。 Maybe I should visit Scotland 3。 When I get to drinking and start spouting this stuff, I probably annoy the shit out of everyone around me 。。。more

I didn’t finish the whole thing coz it was too much like a comedy special。 Before you start saying “Duh, he’s a comedian” you should read books written by John Cleese and Martin Short coz even thought they’re hilarious comedians their books FEEL like books! That said, I quite like Daniel Sloss and I think he has very insightful things to say…Just not in a book。3/5 starss
Ryan,
Like many others, I love Sloss as a comedian。 The book started strong but ended being recycled material from his specials and took more energy to read through。 Great first book from him though, hopefully he’ll see some of the reviews and see where he went wrong。 Or not, as he said; he already has my money。
Ben,
I honestly picked this up based on the title alone。 Didn't know anything about the author or what to expect。 I found it thoroughly amusing and I'm glad I chose the audio format as it's read by the author in full Scottish accent。 Also in the off chance he reads this, I found the america chapter hysterical and a completely accurate description of us。 I honestly picked this up based on the title alone。 Didn't know anything about the author or what to expect。 I found it thoroughly amusing and I'm glad I chose the audio format as it's read by the author in full Scottish accent。 Also in the off chance he reads this, I found the america chapter hysterical and a completely accurate description of us。 。。。more

Sloss smashed the heck outta this。 Hearing the words come out of his little mouth was perfect 👏🏾 he really made me think about some of the situations in my life (past and current relationships) and actually spurred some open and honest conversations between us。Absolute top lad, thanks for the train giggles。

I listened to the audiobook。 Expected a lot of swearing in a Scottish accent。 Was not disappointed。
Francesca Brown,
Daniel Sloss is, in my opinion, one of the best stand up comedians。 He has a way of taking incredibly dark taboo topics and making them hilarious。 I have rewatched Jigsaw so many times to remind myself that I’d rather be single than in a mediocre relationship。 His classic blunt humor and no bullshit advice shines through in this book, and it’s just delightful。
Crystal,
I heard Daniel Sloss on Conan O'Brien's podcast and found him to be quite hilarious。 He is refreshingly blunt and honest (and will most certainly offend some/many people), and I found the book to be quite timely and relevant to my life。 Definitely not a book for everyone (especially if you are easily offended and/or don't like explicit language), but I very much enjoyed it。 I heard Daniel Sloss on Conan O'Brien's podcast and found him to be quite hilarious。 He is refreshingly blunt and honest (and will most certainly offend some/many people), and I found the book to be quite timely and relevant to my life。 Definitely not a book for everyone (especially if you are easily offended and/or don't like explicit language), but I very much enjoyed it。 。。。more

I've enjoyed a couple of Sloss's stand-up specials, but I found these essays on relationships to be meandering, repetitive, and lacking the potency of his stand-up, with occasional momemts that kept me listening (and laughing)。 He also comes across as way more obnoxious on the page than on stage。 A warning: Sloss's comedy is very dark and profane。 I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the delivery and Scottish accent, the asides to his publisher, all the Scottish slang。 But I'd recomment watch I've enjoyed a couple of Sloss's stand-up specials, but I found these essays on relationships to be meandering, repetitive, and lacking the potency of his stand-up, with occasional momemts that kept me listening (and laughing)。 He also comes across as way more obnoxious on the page than on stage。 A warning: Sloss's comedy is very dark and profane。 I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the delivery and Scottish accent, the asides to his publisher, all the Scottish slang。 But I'd recomment watching Dark or Jigsaw instead。 。。。more
